The last hole at the British Open is a tough one. It is par 4 that many of the players are playing like a par 5. You don't see that very often on the PGA Tour. It will probably make for a great finishing hole on the final round. If it comes down to the end it will be fun to watch!
Thanks to the exploits of one Jean Van de Velde and his final-hole comedy routine, the par-4 18th hole at Carnoustie Golf Links is as well-known as any in golf.
But the kind of disaster that befell Van de Velde here eight years ago during the British Open was not necessary for those competing in this year's tournament to know just how treacherous a finishing hole they face. Three rounds of play have produced plenty of evidence.
"I just think you've got to play the hole as a par-5," said K.J. Choi, who has done just that, making bogey all three days. "Even if you get a bogey, just consider it a good par."
But will a 5 be good enough? Remember, Van de Velde needed only a 6 and could not produce.
